Change can be hard. It is stepping outside of what is familiar and that can be a scary step to take - even when the familiar is an unhappy place. The process of change may not look like you initially think it will., sometimes things can feel worse as old hurts are brought to the surface. It is important to enter therapy understanding this.
Change is an internal process that creates external ripples. Some of those ripple may surprise you. Sometimes internal reflection can bring up older traumas and feelings that are distinctively distressing. Change is a process, not a light switch. Sometimes as you find changes that you like, others in your life will push back against them, so change can sometimes face external challenges as you work through it.
Ultimately, the process of change belongs to the individual, their understanding and acceptance of what they can control and what they cannot, and where they want change to take them.
Therapy is not someone telling you what to do, it is a guided, thoughtful, skill building experience that allows you to discover, evolve, and heal to appreciate your best self and the life you want to live.
